To
know the Goddess of Terroir is to know the
meaning of the French word, "terroir."
Terroir is the interaction
between the soil, the topography and the
climate. In the growing of wine grapes,
it is the terroir (terºor) that produces
the quality and complexity of the grapes.
Think of the Goddess as the
beauty of Terroir. She is a triple goddess.
She represents the three aspects of the
moon and womankind: 1) waxing crescent,
2) full moon, and 3) waning crescent. In
harmony with all of nature, like the vines,
she sleeps in the winter, awakens in the
spring, comes into full bloom herself, nurturing
the grapes as they ripen throughout the
growing season. Then, after giving up the
fruits of her labor at harvest-time, the
Goddess returns to sleep, awaiting the next
cycle of seasons, dreaming of grapes and
wines yet to be born.
Look closely at the image
of the Goddess. Surrounding her you will
see the nature of Leona Valley, the presence
of creatures whose spirits still roam here.
You will see the Goddess as sleeping beauty,
awakened and fertile, then returned to sleep.
Such is the beauty of the
Goddess of Terroir. Such is the beauty of
Leona Valley. Such is the beauty of our
wines.
